On September 25th 1974, the first triathlon was held in Mission Bay, just outside San Diego, CA. Attracting just 46 entrants, it was a modest start to what has become an extremely popular racing event catagory, with hundreds of triathlons of various lengths being held worldwide each year. Composed of a swimming section, a bicycling section, and a running section, a triathlon is one of the world's most difficult events. Winning a triathlon demands exceptionally high levels of physical fitness and specialized skills, such as transitioning quickly from one section to the next.
